Unexpected quiet period?


What do you do when you find yourself in an unexpected quiet period in your business? Quieter than it ever has ever been before?

You tell people about your business, otherwise known as ‘marketing’! Businesses, large and small, usually go into ‘buckle up’ mode in a downturn. They tighten their belts and watch their cash flow even more closely than normal. This usually includes a review of the budget and chopping any excess spending out of it. Unfortunately all too often the marketing budget is deemed as ‘excess spending’ and it gets the chop too!

The thing is, it is in these quieter times that it is more important than ever to ensure you are top of mind for your clients. Yes, clearly they aren’t spending and normal behavioural patterns may be on hold, but you want to ensure that should they need to buy, the first thing they think about is your business. How can that happen if you have completely dropped off the radar?

Marketing campaigns rarely work overnight. Establishing a position in your customers’ mind is a result of a committed and consistent presence throughout both busy and quiet periods and this does not have to mean spending thousands of dollars! Maybe you have a regular spot in the paper once a week, or a targeted social media advertising campaign for the first week of each month. Whatever it may be, if you decide on a strategy, ensure you know your goals and see the campaign through to the end. Of course, be smart about where you invest your marketing dollars and consider all the available options out there, there are plenty!

Whatever you choose, don’t choose to fall off the radar by not doing any advertising or marketing at all.
